Octane value is an indication of the anti-knocking property of a certain type of petrol. The higher the octane value, the stronger will be the anti-knocking property. The grade of petrol to use will depend on the engine's compression ratio. The higher the compression ratio, the higher octane value will be required in the petrol used.
